Give a gift of New Year's Hope to a Spousal Caregiver:

Participate in the WSA Friends and Family Campaign --HUGS -- Help Us Give Support, Help Us Gain Support

At the end of  National Family Caregivers Month - November 2009 - the Well Spouse Association  launched its 2009-2010 HUGS program. We invite those who are friends or relatives of a spousal caregiver -- someone whose spouse or partner has a long-term chronic illness and/or disability - to participate in two ways.  Donate here.

1. Send the caregiver HUGS (Help Us Give Support)  through an encouraging, uplifting message to appear in the next issue of Mainstay, the WSA quarterly newsletter mailed to each member.  Imagine how surprised and empowered your loved one will feel when opening up that issue of Mainstay to read your message and the messages others have sent!

2. Support the well spouse community to which your loved one belongs by including your tax-deductible donation along with your message.  Your donation will help offset the costs of this expanded and special issue of Mainstay and provide HUGS (Help Us Gain Support) for our national organization to continue its mission.

If the message recipient is not already a WSA supporting member, we will use $30* of your donation to make them a supporting member -- able to receive issues of Mainstay for one year. Sample Mainstay issue Read here.

N.B. Note to WSA supporting members: To participate,  please EMail this message to your friends and family.

  •  Here's a quote from a member on just how important HUGS are to caregivers:
  • "I recently received test results from my doctor, who explained to my IS that he shouldn't put any unnecessary pressure on me.  Then after we talked, she gave me a big, tight hug.  I really don't know the last time a healthy person gave me a caring and compassionate hug! It's really amazing how such a simple thing as a hug can mean so much."

Did You Know . . .

Fact: Members

Note: For 21 years an annual supporting membership, including a subscription to Mainstay and other benefits was $25.  Recently, the WSA Board voted to raise that cost by $5 to $30 in the U.S. and $35 elsewhere in North America. Overseas, Mainstay will only be available elecronically, in the members' area. Had we kept up to inflation the cost today would be $43.50.

Two-thirds of the members of the Well Spouse are under 65. About one-third are under age 45. We have members who are in their 20’s and 30’s, especially with ill spouses who have Traumatic Brain Injury, or MS. Let others who have “been there and done that” help you face the challenges of long-term caregiving.

Playing the Canada Card: an American Caregiver's Experience

The siege lasted 16 hours.I thought of survival, not of Canada. As it turned out, survival and Canada would become one and the same.
