Celebrating a fellow well spouse's new memoir, with former WSA President Laurel Wittman

We're celebrating one of our own. Well Spouse member Virginia Eubanks has written a new memoir, A Guide to Open Water Lifesaving: Lessons on Love, Care, and Survival and we're gathering as a community to talk about it.

The book tells the story of caring for her partner through trauma and PTSD, and the medical, financial, and bureaucratic systems she navigated along the way. Virginia draws her lessons from an unlikely place: wilderness and water-rescue survival training. The New York Times called it "profoundly moving."

Virginia has already started sharing what she learned. In a recent post, she outlined eight lessons from wilderness survival training that apply directly to a caregiving crisis. About the author: Virginia Eubanks is a longform investigative reporter, essayist, memoirist, and Associate Professor of Political Science at the University at Albany, SUNY. She is also the author of Automating Inequality: How High-Tech Tools Profile, Police, and Punish the Poor, among other books. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Harper's, The Nation, Scientific American, and Wired.
